When to Neuter

Canine
Bitches:
Spey at 6 months of age before 1st season
Dogs:
Castrate from 6 months of age onwards

Feline
Queens:
Spey at 5 to 6 months of age
Toms:
Castrate at 5 to 6 months of age

Rabbits
Does:
Spey at 6 months of age
Bucks:
Castrate at 6 months of age, can be done earlier (sexual maturity 4 months onwards)
if mixing with females.

Guinea Pigs
Sows:
Spey at 6 months of age
Boars:
Castrate at 6 months of age, can be done earlier (sexual maturity 9 to 10 weeks)
if mixing with females.

Ferrets
Jills:
Spey at 6 to 9 months of age before first oestrus (1st March after birth)
Hobs:
Castrate/vasectomy at 6 months of age



When to Vaccinate

Canine
For immunisation against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirus, parainfluenza, bordetella and rabies

Puppies:
6 - 8 weeks of age 1st vaccination
10 weeks of age 2nd vaccination
3 weeks of age or older kennel cough
12 weeks of age or older rabies

Adults:
Annual boosters
Annual kennel cough
Every 2 years rabies
Feline
For immunisation against flu and enteritis

Kittens:
9 weeks of age 1st vaccination
12 weeks of age 2nd vaccination

Adults:
Annual boosters

Rabbits
For immunisation against myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD)

6 weeks of age or older myxomatosis vaccination
Bi-annual myxomatosis boosters

10 - 12 weeks of age VHD vaccination
Annual VHD boosters

 

When to Worm

Canine and Feline

Puppies and Kittens:
Worm as directed from 2 weeks of age using suitable puppy or kitten wormer obtained from the surgery.

Adult Dogs and Cats:
Worm every 3 months from 6 months of age using a suitable adult wormer obtained from the surgery.

Rabbits
Worm 2 to 4 times a year with a suitable wormer obtained from the surgery.

Exotics and Birds
Contact the surgery for further advice.
